Automotive Part Out Projects

Hands-on experience gained by parting out and rebuilding components of a Mazda MX-5 Miata, developing practical skills in automotive disassembly, mechanical systems, and component diagnostics.

Summer 2024 Personal project

2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata LS prior to disassembly

Overview

This project involved parting out and selling components from a 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata LS after a motor failure, turning a non-functional vehicle into a learning experience in mechanical disassembly, systems understanding, and value recovery. The goal was to maximize return on investment by identifying, removing, and selling usable components while gaining hands-on mechanical experience.

Objectives & Challenges

The primary objective was to develop practical automotive skills while recovering value from a broken vehicle. Major challenges included inventorying and organizing dozens of components, determining which assemblies to keep intact, and managing sales within a limited timeframe before relocation. Mechanical challenges included dealing with rusted bolts, tight clearances, and complex fastener systems — all of which required patience, creativity, and problem-solving in real time.

Technical Skills & Tools

Automotive Disassembly • Mechanical Diagnostics • Fastener Removal Techniques • Tool Use & Safety • Component Labeling & Inventory • Online Sales Platforms (eBay, Facebook Marketplace) • Negotiation & Value Assessment

Contributions & Processes

I personally handled every aspect of the process — diagnosing the engine failure, researching part values, disassembling the car, organizing and labeling components, and selling parts through multiple channels. I kept related assemblies intact when needed, maintained clear documentation of inventory, and coordinated buyer communication and shipping logistics.

Results & Takeaways

By the end of the project, I earned a net profit exceeding the original cost of the vehicle, while gaining deep mechanical familiarity with internal-combustion systems, drivetrain assemblies, and automotive design. Beyond the technical skills, this experience taught me persistence, problem-solving under time constraints, and the real-world connection between mechanical work and business decision-making. I now feel confident diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles — and applying the same mindset to larger engineering systems.
